Municipal Solid Waste

Expert for Patent Case

The need

Attorneys representing a renewable fuel technology company in its patent infringement case against a recycling company needed an expert in municipal solid waste management to prove their case. The patents-in-suit related to renewable materials derived from waste and used to manufacture fuel. As such, the expert would need to be highly knowledgeable about the practice of separating waste for the purpose of manufacturing fuel and fuels that substitute for coal.

Our approach

From conversations with the client, we understood experience with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in relation to the separation process used to turn waste into fuel would be ideal. Also, since this expert would be technical in nature, they would need to have deposition and testimony experience.

The expert

We found an expert with an BS in Mechanical Engineering from a top university who was recognized for his work in power generation using renewable fuels including municipal solid waste. His 40 years of experience covered waste processing to decontaminate including separating out different densities of materials. Additionally, he had significant experience working with the EPA on various projects. He held three patents related to renewable energy manufacturing. Finally, he had prior expert witness experience having given deposition testimony in multiple cases.
